High school
scholarships:
We
believe that good education is the pathway to an improved quality of life, for
with it comes better career opportunities and the know how for healthy living
conditions. It is in recognition of these facts that we’re positioning ourselves
as mentors to the young students, and also committed to advance educational
opportunities to orphans and those from needy families. We believe in gender
equality of the sexes and thus our financial support will also be distributed
evenly.
We will work in partnership with the High school administrators to
facilitate the running of the scholarship program. Our scholars will choose the
academic institutions and we will then make the tuition and activity fee payment
directly to the schools. The school will then issue payment credit to the
beneficiary student. If the beneficiary student does not have any tuition
balance, the funds will then be disbursed on a quarterly basis directly to the
student as long as he/she is still enrolled in school. Scholarship funds will
not be advanced to students who are no longer attending
school.
Each scholarship award is Ksh10,000.00 (Ten thousand Kenya
shillings, equivalent to US $150 dollars)
A student is
considered to have met the family income threshold requirement if the
application is endorsed by all three individuals to certify that the student is
either an orphan or comes from a needy family. The headmaster, sub-chief, and
church pastor must endorse the form. Students will also be expected to provide a
passport size photograph to be submitted with the application form. Four
students per school will be nominated by the Headmaster to participate in the
scholarship program, of which two must be girls. Since many schools will be
participating the odds of winning the scholarship award will principally hinge
on the student’s performance in the National Examination, KCPE. The student with
the highest score will be selected, and in the event of a tie, the executive
board may use any criteria at their disposal to break the tie. The scholarships
will be awarded in January.
We
anticipate the High school scholarship program will commence in the 2009
academic year, with projected award levels gradually increasing up to
100
scholarships. We expect more than 100 primary schools to participate and
consequently justifying the need for the scholarship increase. The scholarships
help ease the financial burden for parents in the community who are inherently
poor. More importantly, we believe they will also motivate young girls and,
hopefully, will encourage all students to do well at
school.

College scholarships:
We believe that university education is central to better career
opportunities and better healthy living conditions. It is in recognition of
these facts that we’re positioning ourselves to act as mentors to college
students, and consequently advance education opportunities to orphans and those
from needy families. We believe in educational equality of the sexes and thus
our financial support will also be distributed evenly among qualified girls and
boys.
Once admitted to the colleges, our scholars will be awarded full
scholarships in the form of tuition waiver plus consideration for room and
board. KACO will meet the other incidental expenses, and the student will be
expected to take on-campus employment in order to supplement our stipend. A
round trip Airfare, where necessary, will be provided to the beneficiary
student. The stipend funds will be disbursed on a quarterly basis directly to
the student as long as he/she stays enrolled in school. Scholarship funds will
not be advanced to students who will no longer be attending school. In order to
meet college admission requirements, potential students may be required by the
admitting universities to take and pass the TOEFEL
test.
Each scholarship award is up to US $
500 per year (Five hundred dollars)
A student is considered to have met the family income threshold

Headmaster, sub-chief, and church pastor. Students will also be expected to

We expect the recipients of the
scholarships will promise to “pay it forward” by pledging future membership to
KACO and contributing to this and other charitable organizations in the
future.

college program. Program updates will be posted on this website as partnerships
and funding details are all put in place.

Water
Projects:
Clean
water is a serious problem in the eastern region of Kenya
for domestic use
and for livestock.
It is not easily available, and women and children have to walk many miles in
search of water. In order to mitigate the water shortage problems, we will
engage in digging boreholes, wells, dams, and/or where necessary install water
tanks to harvest rain water. In areas where electricity is available we will
orchestrate the means to pump the water to communal water points that would be
easily accessible by all the community members. We will provide funds for the
projects and work in partnership with the local communities to actualize the
projects. We believe in the power of partnership, and local communities must be
the driving force behind the execution of our projects to ensure the solutions
are both practical and sustainable.
The type of water project to be implemented will be based on the
needs of the particular community. Once selected, we will move fairly quickly to
start its development with the goal of completing and handing over management
responsibilities to the local community within one
year.
These efforts will
improve water quality and minimize the travel time to procure water for
household use thus leaving ample time for the women and/or girls to engage in
academic activities.
School and Hospital
supplies:
Our initial focus will be collecting donated school and medical
supplies in the USA and distributing these to Kenyan
schools and community Hospitals, with the executive board identifying the
community recipients. Our goal will be to send annually one full container
filled with books, computers, hospital and surgical supplies. The recipient
local communities would be expected to deal with obtaining goods clearances, and
ensuring import duty tax waivers are extended.
We
are currently working on the implementation logistics for the
supplies program. Program updates will be posted on this website once
partnerships and funding details are put in place.
